About the Author - and the Illustrator, too!
I'm Linda Maki-Griffis, and I was born and raised in a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I've had poetry published in children’s magazines, but this is my first book. I feel deep satisfaction in knowing that in its pages, I have immortalized, if only in a fictionalized way, those who mean the most to me.
I live with my family in the U.P., where I enjoy music, reading, writing, kayaking, camping, beach-combing, and . . . picking berries!
Saralee Hogue was born and raised in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. She's come a long way since her childhood days of furtively scrawling her masterpieces on the wall behind the couch; her artwork has since been featured in shows, on signs, and on a myriad of crafts that can be seen all over the United States. This is her first voyage into book illustrating, and she’s excited to have her work featured in more books to come!
Sara lives with her family on their farm in the U.P., where she raises miniature horses, riding horses and Heritage breed chickens. She spends most of her time caring for her farm, but she also enjoys riding and showing horses, reading, camping and, of course, drawing!

Giving Back
Good things happen when kids participate in the fine arts: school performance goes up, and absences go down; creativity and critical thinking skills improve, while engagement in risky behaviors declines; self-esteem rises, and so do graduation rates—the list goes on, spilling over into benefits that can literally last a lifetime.
It’s disturbing to me that, due to various factors, more and more schools are cutting more and more of their fine arts programs. I know I can’t ensure that every kid gets a good start in the arts, but I am
dedicating 10% of the profits from the sale of In the Berry Patch to help encourage children in my own little corner of the U.P. to participate in the fine arts. If you place an order (or if you already have), please know that you will be helping to spread the arts and its many benefits to some very deserving children who no longer receive music/visual arts as part of their elementary school education.
I thank you for your support!
